Learn the basics
The more you surf, the more you will realize how much there is to learn. That’s why we’ve put together a guide on the basics to help you out if you’re still a beginner or just need to re-fresh on some of the basics.
Wave understanding
The first thing you need to learn in surfing is how waves are created. Understanding how a wave is formed, what causes hollow waves that can be dangerous when starting out in surfing, and what causes waves to break is crucial to your safety.

Patrick has been surfing his entire life, including professionally. He has over 20 years of coaching and teaching surfing experience under his belt. His primary intention is to help improve his students, so that they can surf more but also become more injury resistant to the rigors of surfing and learn how to actively look after themselves. The typical surfing lesson with Patrick typically involves much more than just the basics, encompassing such essential elements as reading and understanding the ocean, evaluating other surfers in the lineup and the principles of body mechanics.
